Medical Insurance for foreign scholars who study South Africa

Medical Insurance is not only important for international students who want to add academic level in South Africa, but also is important for any student who prefer abroad studies.

All non-South African citizens, including students who are citizens from SADC countries, need to comply with the immigration regulation as determined by the Republic before registration. Medical cover is required at all times for the period of your visa validity.

Newcomers are advised to purchase medical coverage before coming to the country online. Please refrain from requesting third parties to purchase medical coverage for you due to fraudulent practices uncovered previously.

The medical scheme must be registered with the Medical Schemes Council of South Africa. https://www.medicalschemes.com/MedicalSchemes.aspx?flt=L

The medical aid or health insurance must a recognised service provider in South Africa. You will need to provide proof of your cover when you enrol at IIE MSA.

If you already have insurance, have a second look, as it might not be enough. You must follow the criteria set by your university, local laws and regulations, and immigration laws.

Applying for the right insurance can be tricky, because you need to comply with the law and regulations of South Africa. Your university might also have additional insurance requirements.
